Our Studio Apartment Renovation

Happy Wednesday!

I don’t know about you, but it feels like this week is flying by. But despite that I am actually having a great week…and I hope you are, too.

Alright, let’s get into the post.

My boyfriend, Oliver, and I both live with my parents and in March of this year, we renovated an area at the end of my parent’s house into our own little “studio apartment” space. This was an idea we had been talking about for a while and had actually discussed with my parents when Olly first moved in back in June of 2019 but at the time, my parents weren’t on board, which I understood.

When March of this year rolled around, however, my Mum actually came to me and suggested we turn the end room of the house into our own space. The area used to be a garage and my parents had turned it into their office space for their business. But late last year, they moved their office to a commercial premise and so now Mum felt the best use of the area would be for us to turn it into our own bedroom/living room/dining/office…essentially a studio apartment.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect because we finished the renovations JUST as Australia entered quarantine. Now we have a great area that we can hang out in and retreat to when we need our own space, and not feel pressured to move out while we save for a house (which could take a while due to current events).

Nevertheless, let me take you through our renovation process.

I also made a video of the process which you can watch below. Subscribe to my YouTube channel for more video updates of our apartment.

We decided this area was going to be where we’d put our bed and “bedroom” set-up.

Then the renovation process began.

We began by marking out the length of our wall extension.

And then started building the frame.

Next was plasterboard.

We weren’t very good at this.

But after painting the wall, it turned out okay.

For the other side of the wall. We wanted to paint it a feature colour so we chose “Electric Avenue” from British Paints. This colour took about three coats to get the perfect coverage.

This was the construction completed, so the last step was to build our wardrobes and move in our furniture. This is how our bedroom currently looks.

For now, this is our living room (featuring Olly’s skateboards). Our couch is being delivered later this week so this area will change completely which we are both really excited about.

I had to feature my egg chair which Olly made me for Christmas last year. We want to add some more grey/blue fur to the inside but it is super cosy. So thanks Olly!

We also have a little dining area where we eat breakfast and sometimes even do work; although we do have a desk/office area which I will share in another post because that is definitely still a work in progress.

That is where our little studio is at right now. There are some new furniture pieces coming soon and a lot more decor that I want to add because I just cant help myself, meaning there will be some more apartment posts coming soon.
